Airport Expansion in Casablanca: Unveiling of New World Cup Terminal at Airport Facility

Morocco is set to invest 15 billion dirhams (approximately 1.43 billion euros) in the construction of a new terminal at Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca, as part of its national strategy for airport expansion by 2030. This ambitious project aims to transform Casablanca Airport into a major African hub and accommodate the increasing air traffic demands.

The new terminal, slated for completion by 2029, is expected to significantly boost the airport's passenger capacity from the current 10.5 million to 35 million. The expansion is a significant investment in Morocco's tourism and transportation sectors, aligning with the country's preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which it will co-host with Spain and Portugal.

The new terminal will serve as a strategic gateway, connecting Casablanca to the planned high-speed rail network linking Kenitra to Marrakesh. This improved connectivity between cities is a part of Morocco's broader strategy to modernise its transportation infrastructure.

In addition to Casablanca, airports in Marrakesh and Agadir are also planned for expansion. The airports in these cities are expected to accommodate 14 million and 6.3 million passengers, respectively, by 2030.

A notable development in Casablanca is the French company Safran's plans to build a new maintenance workshop for LEAP engines, operational by 2026. This facility is expected to increase maintenance capacity for modern aircraft engines in the region and create around 600 direct jobs.

The expansion of airport infrastructure in Morocco is a testament to the country's commitment to growth and development. By 2030, Morocco aims to increase its total airport capacity to 80 million passengers, compared to 38 million in 2024.

The 2030 FIFA World Cup, to be co-hosted by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal, will undoubtedly benefit from these expansions, ensuring smooth and efficient travel for the millions of spectators expected to attend the event. The future of air travel in Morocco looks bright, with exciting times ahead for both tourists and locals alike.
