Airport in Billund Revises Liquid Carry-On Rules
Billund Airport, located in Jutland, Denmark, is set to become the first Danish airport to implement new EU rules regarding hand luggage liquids. The airport has received official approval for its advanced 3D scanners, which are expected to revolutionise the security check process[1].
These 3D scanners enable precise analysis of bag contents, allowing liquids and electronics to remain inside hand luggage during security checks, thus streamlining the process and improving the passenger experience[1][3]. The new measures at Billund Airport aim to make travel safer by using advanced technology while also improving the travel experience for frequent flyers and all passengers[4].
However, despite Billund Airport's readiness to roll out these measures shortly, a directive from ACI Europe and EU Aviation Security Regulation issued on July 31, 2025, requires all airports equipped with the new CT scanners—including Billund—to temporarily reinstate the 100 ml liquid restriction due to technical concerns and uneven implementation across the EU[5]. This means that although the airport is technologically prepared for the updated liquid allowances, the previous restrictions are currently still in force until further notice.
It's worth noting that several European airports, including Edinburgh and Birmingham, have already implemented the new liquid rules using 3D scanners[6]. Copenhagen airport is still awaiting approval of its scanners. The introduction of more advanced technology in airports is expected to lead to smoother and safer journeys for travellers[2].
