Get ready for a whirlwind of concerts, sailing events, and a whole lot of fun! Kiel, the charming capital of Schleswig-Holstein, is gearing up for its annual Kieler Woche (preparations from June 21 to June 29). The city comes alive with energy a day early, with crowds gathering in the heart of Kiel and on the water.
"There's nothing quite like being the mayor during Kieler Woche," shares Kiel's current mayor, Ulf Kaempfer (SPD), who has occupied the position over the past several years. As this marks his final Kieler Woche, Ulf aims to soak in the festivities to the fullest, as he won't be running for a second term in November.
"From the Krusenkoppel playline, the windjammer parade, the International City Forum, the Young Stage, and the International Market, to the neighborhood festivals and Kieler Woche snapshots – this Kieler Woche transcends boundaries, promoting unity and understanding among people," Ulf shared with exuberance.
Federal Council President Anke Rehlinger and Minister President Daniel Günther (CDU) are slated to grace the official opening on the 24th of June. The evening will be marked with the legendary "cast off!" signal, where Anke and handball national player Rune Dahmke (THW Kiel) will issue the traditional blast on a ship's horn.
Music and Sailing Galore
Last year, the festival drew approximately 3.5 million attendees, according to organizers. The 2023 lineup promises an array of musical acts across 20 stages, with numerous performances that are free for visitors. Scandinavian stars like Aura Dione from Denmark, enigmatic Finnish deaf hip hop artist, Signmark, and more, are expected to delight attendees.
Above all, Kieler Woche continues to be a popular sailing sports event. Boasting more than 4,000 athletes from over 60 nations, the regattas are sure to be a spectacle. For the first time, competitions will take place on 14 regatta courses across just 10 parallel racing areas, offering a closer view of the action. Additionally, a new location, Stein (Plön district), joins Kiel-Schilksee as a participating venue, boasting waterways on the other side of the fjord. Approximately 50 nations in 22 boat classes are expected to participate.
Updated Security Measures
The increased presence of police officers in the city is one change that visitors might notice. This move aims to boost the sense of security among attendees, and knife checks will also be implemented on the event grounds. It should be noted that carrying any form of stabbing or cutting weapons is strictly prohibited on the festival grounds.
To ensure safety, mobile and fixed barriers, bollards, and barriers will be set up to deter unauthorized vehicles from accessing the event areas. Visitors can check the crowd levels for various areas of the festival on the official Kieler Woche website. The color-coded traffic light system ranges from green (open) to red (closed) to help festivalgoers plan their day accordingly.
Nautical Nights and Naval Delights
The sailing school ship "Gorch Fock" will lead the windjammer parade. In addition to the famous ship's participation, the navy expects approximately two dozen ships from twelve countries, with nearly 1,500 soldiers aboard in total. The German sail training ship "Gorch Fock" will return to Kiel on June 26 and will lead the traditional Windjammer Parade on the fjord on June 28. During the 27th, attendees will have the chance to board the ship for a closer look at life on the high seas. Other navy ships are expected to provide tours during the opening weekend for visitors to explore.
Summer festivities will culminate with a fitting fireworks display showcasing drones over the fjord on June 29. Let the good times sail!
