Anticipated Flight Disruptions: Identifying Potential Delays in the Summer of 2025

In a recent analysis, travel planning platform KAYAK has shed light on the expected return flight delays in the summer of 2025. The findings offer valuable insights for travellers planning their trips during this period.

According to KAYAK's forecasts, the summer of 2025 will see particularly heavy traffic on June 6 and 7, as well as August 1 and 2. These days are expected to be busy not only in Germany but also in other popular destinations.

Yvonne Bonanati, a representative from KAYAK, advises those who wish to avoid crowds to consider alternative travel dates. She notes that ticket prices often rise with demand, making it essential for travellers to plan ahead.

In Germany, smaller airports such as Bremen had a more relaxed travel experience in 2024, with only 17% of flights delayed, on average by just 18 minutes. However, the analysis does not include data for flights from smaller German airports.

On the other hand, major airports such as Munich, Cologne, and Frankfurt were particularly affected by flight delays. Munich had the highest percentage of flight delays, with 49% of all departures delayed, on average by 35 minutes. Frankfurt am Main followed closely with 44% of flights delayed, on average by 33 minutes.

Interestingly, evening flights at 11 p.m. had a delay rate of 58%, while at 3 p.m., travelers often had to be patient with a delay rate of 54%. Early morning flights (6 a.m.) had the best chance of punctuality, with only 14% of flights delayed in 2024.

The high delay rates in Germany in the summer of 2024 can be attributed to staff shortages, technical issues, and strikes. KAYAK's forecasts suggest that these issues will persist in the summer of 2025, particularly at major airports such as Munich, Berlin, Bremen, Hamburg, Hannover, Stuttgart, Frankfurt am Main, Karlsruhe, Weeze, and Düsseldorf. Frankfurt am Main and Düsseldorf airport are expected to be strongly affected.

Travellers planning trips to Miami should be prepared for an average wait time of 40 minutes. Lisbon and Mallorca also recorded high values, with 45% delayed flights. In the return journey, passengers in Antalya had to wait an average of 38 minutes, with 53% of flights delayed.

In conclusion, KAYAK's analysis provides valuable insights into where to expect flight delays in the summer of 2025. Travellers are advised to plan their trips carefully, consider alternative travel dates, and be prepared for potential delays, especially at major airports.
