Anticipated Rise in Tourist Numbers from Poland, Hungary, and Slovenia in Croatia
June 20, 2025 - Booming Croatia: Polish, Hungarian, and Slovenian Tourists on the Rise
Summertime in Croatia is shaping up to be lively, with a surge in Polish, Hungarian, and Slovenian tourists. While German and Italian travelers took a dip earlier in the year, worry not, summer is looking brighter now. The first half of June alone saw a heartening 80% hike in German arrivals, easing tensions about the vacation season.
As The Voice of Istria's Alenka Juricic Bukarica reports, 2024's summer brought a shakeup in Croatia's strongest outbound markets. The German, Austrian, Italian, and Czech markets took a slight dip, but it was a different story for Slovenia, Poland, and Hungary. In fact, more tourists arrived from these countries last year compared to 2023. Slovenians, the third most numerous guests, managed a 2% increase in overnight stays, the Poles climbed up by 6%, and the Hungarians impressively bolted ahead by 8%. Notably, the United Kingdom and the United States also showed growth in the non-European market.

Slovenia's growth in tourist traffic last year can be attributed to several factors. According to Bruno Bonifačić, director of the Croatian National Tourist Board's (CNTB) Ljubljana office, the alliance between a continued high level of trust and loyalty among Slovenian tourists, Croatia's reputation as a safe and diverse destination with easy accessibility and high-quality offerings, and several promotional activities by the CNTB played a significant role. Slovenian tourists see Croatia as their closest and favorite holiday destination due to its proximity, familiarity, sea, gastronomy, and hospitality, as well as its extensive array of active tourism opportunities.

Despite the economic situation putting a strain on choices for accommodation and length of stay, Croatia has something for every budget, thanks to its diversity in campsites, private accommodations, and high-class hotels. Slovenian tourists are known to plan well in advance with early reservations, thereby mitigating potential cost challenges, even during trips to Croatia. So far this year, Slovenia has witnessed a 6% increase in arrivals and a 7% jump in overnight stays from Slovenian tourists in Croatia, highlighting the fact that Slovenia tourists have recognized Croatia as a year-round destination.

The Polish market saw significant growth last year as well. Polish tourists clocked over 1.2 million arrivals and 7.1 million overnight stays in Croatia, signifying an 8% leap in arrivals and a 6% spike in overnight stays compared to 2023. Małgorzata Kowalska, director of the CNTB's Warsaw office, credits the growth primarily to the efforts and resources invested in numerous promotional and marketing activities in Poland by the CNTB. Polish tourists adore Croatia for its beautiful, diverse nature, hospitable hosts, and rich cultural heritage. Despite the rise in prices in Croatian tourism, Poland remains one of the most popular foreign destinations for them, thanks to its sunshine, sea, and cultural heritage attractions such as UNESCO monuments, museums, and national parks.
While inflation and price increases have pushed many Polish tourists towards more affordable destinations, Croatia still benefits from heavy interest, as it offers a wide variety of accommodation options, including camps, private accommodations, and high-class hotels, catering to different budgets.

Hungarian Tourists Always Favor Croatia
Though it may not receive the spotlight like some larger markets do, Hungary has proven its appeal with consistent strong results. In the first four months alone, Croatia recorded a 13% surge in arrivals and a 1% increase in overnight stays from Hungarian tourists. Ivana Herceg, director of the CNTB's Budapest office, attributes this to Hungary being a market from which Croatia has traditionally achieved excellent results. As Croatia is now a part of the Schengen Area, this has undoubtedly played a role in achieving positive outcomes from Hungary. Reports suggest that 2025 will likely see a replication of last year's results, along with promising trends.
