Budget airline Wizz Air increases presence in Bucharest with new flight paths and extra planes at Băneasa Airport

Low-cost airline Wizz Air has announced a significant expansion in Bucharest, Romania, involving both Otopeni (Henri Coandă Airport) and Băneasa Airports. The move is part of the airline's strategy to strengthen its presence in the Romanian market, one of its largest and most strategic.

Starting from October 26, 2025, Wizz Air will launch six new routes from Otopeni Airport, including Brindisi, Cologne, Gdansk, Porto, Pescara, and Bratislava. The new destinations will be available until October 28.

Meanwhile, Wizz Air is adding a second aircraft to its base at Băneasa Airport, leading to the relocation of nine routes from Otopeni. Five of these routes will be operated exclusively from Băneasa, including flights to Basel, Frankfurt, Memmingen, Nice, and Athens. Shared routes with Otopeni include Milan Bergamo, Barcelona, Brussels-Charleroi, and Turin.

This expansion not only enhances Wizz Air's network but also positions Băneasa for increased importance as a hub for low-cost flights in Bucharest, potentially boosting local tourism and the economy. The airline is also opening a maintenance facility at Băneasa Airport to enhance operational efficiency and address slot constraints in Europe.

Wizz Air currently offers 204 routes from 13 Romanian airports to 75 destinations in 25 countries. With this expansion, the airline will operate 42 weekly flights on the nine Băneasa routes, made possible by the addition of a second Airbus A321ceo.

Tickets for the new routes start at RON 79. The expansion in Bucharest underscores Wizz Air's commitment to offering affordable and accessible travel options to Romanian passengers. With over 1,600 employees in Romania, the airline is a significant contributor to the local economy.

The competition in the local aviation sector, where Wizz Air competes with other low-cost carriers like Ryanair and established airlines such as Tarom and Lufthansa, is reflected in this expansion. Wizz Air's move is a testament to the growing demand for low-cost travel in Romania and the region.

Travelers in Bucharest, Romania will have access to new destinations starting from October 26, 2025, as Wizz Air launches six routes from Otopeni Airport, including Brindisi, Cologne, Gdansk, Porto, Pescara, and Bratislava. Meanwhile, the addition of a second aircraft to Wizz Air's base at Băneasa Airport will boost local tourism and the economy, with five routes operated exclusively from Băneasa, including flights to Basel, Frankfurt, Memmingen, Nice, and Athens.
