Delta Launches First US Flight to Sardinia, Italy on May 20, 2026
Delta Air Lines has announced a new route to Sardinia, Italy, starting May 20, 2026. The service will connect New York (JFK) to Olbia-Costa Smeralda (OLB) four times a week, marking the first nonstop flight from the United States to the island. The decision was made following a voting process called Route Race, involving Delta stakeholders, employees, and SkyMiles Members.
Sardinia, known for its stunning coastlines and historic charm, has long been a popular destination among Europeans. However, it has lacked direct transatlantic connectivity until now. Delta will operate the route using Boeing 767-300ER aircraft, offering four seating categories: Delta One, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort, and Delta Main. Passengers can expect a comfortable journey to the Italian island.
The destination, Olbia, serves as a gateway to the famed Costa Smeralda. This stretch of coastline is renowned for its turquoise seas and white-sand shores, attracting visitors from around the world. The bustling capital, Cagliari, offers an Old World charm with its historic towers and Roman amphitheater. Meanwhile, the Maddalena archipelago, with its pastel-painted buildings, and Porto Cervo, known for its luxury shopping and yacht-dominated marina, provide unique experiences for travelers.
Delta's new route to Sardinia, starting in May 2026, will open up the Italian island to American travelers. With its stunning beaches, historic cities, and vibrant culture, Sardinia promises an exciting destination for those seeking a taste of Italy off the beaten path.
