Airlines for Europe, a sassy collective that includes airline bigwigs like Air France, Lufthansa, Ryanair, and EasyJet, is not here for it. Sounds like Ourania Georgoutsakou, Managing Director of A4E, wants to take a stand against the amendment, asserting:
"Europe's airline market thrives on choice. Forcing a mandatory trolley bag is a slap in the face to passengers, stripping them of control and forcing them to dish out cash for services they might not need. What's next? Mandatory popcorn and drinks as part of your theater ticket? The European Parliament needs to shove off and let travelers decide what services they want, what services they pay for, and, more importantly, what services they don't."
In the current system, airlines are free to structure their fares, deciding whether or not to include large cabin bags in the ticket price. And, let's face it, many A4E members are still charging a fee for those who fancy traveling with more than a petite personal item. This amendment, if approved, would either lead to a decrease in airline profits or—much more likely—an increase in passenger costs.
A4E, the voice for our beloved European carriers, is pleading with the European Parliament to bounce this amendment and preserve consumer choice. We, the travelers, have the "right" to fly light, while the amendment would unnecessarily impose a trolley bag on us and squeeze our wallets dry.
Alright, alright—let's talk about the International Air Transport Association (IATA), who's also firing shots at this ludicrous proposal. They're hurling accusations that the European Parliament's muddling in operational and commercial issues it doesn't understand—true story!
According to IATA's Director General, Willie Walsh, "When regulators meddle with stuff they don't know about, they cause a mess. Our research shows that most of us travelers dig the lowest ticket price possible and prefer to pay extra for services we need. This dumb proposal will force airlines to re-bundle their offerings.
