"Family recounts agonizing final days as Russian victim succumbs to mosquito-borne malaria in dreadful circumstances"

Traveling to exotic destinations, like Tanzania's Zanzibar, can be an unforgettable experience. Regrettably, this wasn't the case for 34-year-old Vladislav Larinov, a car dealership manager from Ulyanovsk. On April 10, he tragically lost his life in Ulyanovsk, marking the city's first fatal malaria case.

Vladislav and his pregnant wife, Kamilla, embarked on this adventure at the end of February 2025. Upon returning, they discovered the chilling truth – Vladislav had been bitten by a malaria-carrying mosquito during their stay. The exact timeline remains unknown.

Fever, Not the FluBeing unambiguously assumed to be just a flu, their initial symptoms – notably, Vladislav's high fever of 39°C – were dismissed by doctors. It wasn't until three or four days later, with little to no improvement, that they called the doctor again, who then admitted him to the hospital in a critical state.

Albert, Kamilla's brother, described the ensuing month in the ICU as a dreadful ordeal, filled with uncertainty and hoping for the best while bracing themselves for the worst. Eventually, their fears were confirmed as Vladislav succumbed to malaria.

Kamila was later tested to ensure both she and their unborn child were in good health. The news of Vladislav's demise was initially intended to stay private, but it was leaked to the media.

Beyond the GraveVladislav and Kamilla tied the knot two years prior and shared an emotional, adventure-filled life. After their wedding, they built their future – buying a home, a car, and planning to start a family.

Tragically, this was just the beginning. Aside from her sorrow, Kamilla now grapples with mortgage and credit debts, as Vladislav had handled all payments until his passing.

The man was a sport enthusiast.

Note: Malaria is less common in Zanzibar compared to mainland Tanzania. Despite progress towards elimination, travelers are still at risk, especially in areas with remaining transmission or travel to and from areas with higher prevalence. Symptoms of malaria include fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Treatment generally involves antimalarial drugs like atovaquone/proguanil, doxycycline, or mefloquine. For travelers, prevention means using insect repellents, sleeping under mosquito nets, and possibly taking prophylactic medication, as advised by a healthcare provider.
