Taking a Better Vacation in Portugal Next Time

First-time Portugal visit proved delightful, but lessons learned to avoid these three errors in future travel.

First-timers like me may have a blast in Portugal, but there's always room for improvement. Here's what I'd change for a future trip:

Prioritize Restaurant Reservations

Lesson learned: make reservations at popular eateries, especially those in crowded cities or tourist hotspots. Booking ahead guarantees a spot at popular places, especially during peak seasons like spring and fall. Don't forget to try local delicacies such as seafood, bacalhau (salted cod), and pastel de nata (custard tart) at restaurants championing regional flavors. Also, remember that Portuguese dining hours are usually later than in some other countries, with dinner starting around 8 PM.

Choose a Central Hub

Staying in the heart of a city like Lisbon or Porto offers easy access to historic and cultural sites, dining, and nightlife. It helps immerse yourself in local culture while minimizing transportation hassle. Be cautious when choosing neighborhoods, as some have cobblestone streets and hills that can make things more challenging. Opt for flatter areas or take a centrally located hotel when possible.

Experience Portugal's Best Attractions

Visit medieval castles and palaces, such as Pena Palace in Sintra or São Jorge Castle in Lisbon, to get a feel for Portugal's rich history and stunning architecture. Join a Fado music performance, stop by local markets, or go on port wine tastings and tours to experience regional culture and flavors. The Algarve coast offers stunning beaches and unique rock formations, perfect for relaxation and outdoor activities. For a more authentic experience, consider visiting less-crowded regions like Alentejo. The best travel times are between March and May and September to October when the weather is pleasant, and the crowds are smaller. Wear comfortable shoes when exploring cobblestone streets and hills.

With these tips in mind, your next vacation in Portugal will be even more memorable and enjoyable!

What about experiencing a different lifestyle during travel next time, by venturing into lesser-crowded regions like Alentejo for a more authentic Portuguese experience? Also, consider booking restaurants ahead to try local delicacies such as bacalhau and pastel de nata, ensuring a spot at popular eateries even during peak seasons like spring and fall.
