HelpAge India Marks International Day of Older Persons 2025 with 'AdvantAge60' Campaign

HelpAge India, led by Kiran Karnik, Chairperson, and Rohit Prasad, CEO, marked the International Day of Older Persons 2025 with the 'AdvantAge60: Powering Aspirations - Active, Enabled & Empowered' campaign. The event aimed to challenge stereotypes of ageing and highlight the strength, resilience, and untapped potential of India's elders.

A recent study found that youth perceive elders as 'dependent' (48%), but also 'wise' (51%) and 'respected' (43%). Karnik emphasized the potential of India's elderly population if given appropriate opportunities. Prasad echoed this, stressing the need to create meaningful channels for elders to apply their skills and wisdom.

The day honored 'Super Seniors Achievers' over 85 years old and 'Champions of Change' in elder care and community service. A panel discussion, 'Building New Enabling Ecosystems for Elders', was held with Pune-based centenarian, former ISRO Scientist, and Padma Bhushan Awardee Professor E.V. Chitnis as the Chief Guest. Chitnis shared insights about his 100-year-journey and the importance of an enabling environment for today's youth. A 2022 HelpAge report revealed that 40% of elders want to be employed 'as long as possible'.

The 'AdvantAge60' campaign by HelpAge India underscored the importance of recognizing and leveraging the potential of India's elderly population. It called for creating opportunities that allow elders to contribute actively, stay enabled, and feel empowered.
