Hollywood hosts premiere of "BAKERU" exhibition and live deer dance showcase on July 17, Los Angeles
In a unique cultural fusion, traditional Japanese Shishi-Odori (Deer Dance) performances and the world debut of the interactive exhibition "BAKERU: Transforming Spirits" are set to captivate audiences in Los Angeles.
The historic Academy Awards stairs at Hollywood & Highland will play host to special Deer Dance performances by traditional dance groups from Japan on July 17. Two complimentary live performances will take place at 2:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
The Deer Dance, a significant part of Japanese folklore, is a symbol of exorcism and protection against evil spirits. These performances aim to share a glimpse of Japan's rich cultural heritage with the Los Angeles community.
In addition to these performances, the interactive "BAKERU: Transforming Spirits" exhibition will run from July 17 to October 6. This innovative exhibition brings traditional Japanese folk spirit customs from the Tohoku region to life through advanced motion capture technology. The purpose of the exhibition is to digitally revive and share these culturally significant rituals and spirits in a modern, immersive format.
Visitors to the exhibition are invited to step into the supernatural world of Japanese folk traditions from Tohoku, Japan, through motion capture technology. The exhibition harnesses interactive digital technology to provide broader access to local culture to audiences beyond the region, including younger, digital-native generations.
The "BAKERU: Transforming Spirits" exhibition is made possible through collaboration with various entities, including the innovative, worldwide project, our website Los Angeles, ANA (All Nippon Airways), Panasonic, Gyouzanryu Maikawa Shishiodori, Tokyo Shishiodori, Oga City, Baba no Taue Odori Preservation Society, FabLab Sendai FLAT, Fukunaga Print Co., Ltd., cap LLC., Ito Yutaka, art direction by WOW, curatorial support provided by tateito-yokoito LLC. and Tohoku Standard, and special thanks to Hollywood & Highland.
The BAKERU Mask Making Workshop will also take place from July 26 to September 15, on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the our website Sub-Gallery, Level 2. For a fee of $5, participants can create their own masks inspired by the exhibition.
