Independent musicians and dancers gather for the inaugural Dallas Indie Dance Festival at Theatre Three
The Dallas Indie Dance Fest, a two-weekend celebration of contemporary dance, is set to take place at Theatre Three from August 8th to 10th and 15th to 17th. This event, organised by Agora Artists, aims to be a significant step forward for the local dance community.
Agora Artists, a grassroots dance company and incubator, was launched in 2020 by Avery-Jai Andrews and Lauren Kravitz. Their home base is Arts Mission Oak Cliff, where Andrews has been the executive director since 2022.
The Dallas Indie Dance Fest will feature 20 choreographers and 65 dancers with varying levels of experience. Andrews is committed to establishing a dance festival in Dallas that prioritizes local makers, filling a gap left by the demise of the Dallas DanceFest.
The organisation operates on an annual budget of $50,000, with small grants from the city of Dallas Office of Arts and Culture, TACA, and the Moody Fund for the Arts. Despite not having a permanent home, Agora Artists is making strides in the dance community.
Ticket prices for each show range from free to $40, and a festival pass is available for $75. The event's website, agoraartists.com/didf, provides more information.
Andrews believes that connecting independent, local dance scenes could be the key to the growth of the dance community. She is considering a long-term strategy of cultivating local dance scenes and exchanging work among them as a sustainable model in the U.S.
While there is no dedicated dance center or annual gathering of dance professionals specifically attributed to Agora Artists and Avery-Jai Andrews, the organisation's efforts are undoubtedly contributing to the vibrant dance community in Dallas.
