Landsberg District Council Opposes Search for Natural Gas - Landsberg am Lech Council Votes to Oppose Gas Drilling, Backs Renewables

The District Council of Landsberg am Lech has voted to oppose gas drilling in the region, reflecting the prevailing opinion among residents and environmental organizations. The decision comes after mass protests and a successful speed test drilling without complications.

The District Council voted 24 to 17 in favor of a motion brought forward by the CSU, Association of Independent Citizens, and the Greens to oppose gas drilling. This decision aligns with the council's long-term goal of a sustainable energy mix, focusing on renewable energy. The council has also resolved not to make any of its own land available for fossil exploration or extraction projects.

Stefan Krug, head of the Greenpeace Bavaria office, praised the decision, stating that it reflects the prevailing opinion against gas drilling and for more climate and environmental protection. The Bund Naturschutz (BN) also commended the council's stance, calling it a 'very good initiative'. The massive protests against the gas project in the region were supported mainly by environmental organizations and local residents opposing fossil gas exploration and extraction.

Speed test drilling in the 'Kinsau 1A' concession area near Lake Ammersee was completed without complications or environmental damage. However, it is still unclear whether the speed test drilling was successful in finding natural gas, as specialist findings will only be available in a few weeks.

The District Council's opposition to gas drilling in the region is a significant step towards a more sustainable energy future. Despite the uncertainty surrounding the recent speed test drilling results, the council's commitment to renewable energy and environmental protection is clear. The council's decision is a reflection of the strong public opinion against fossil fuel exploration and extraction in the region.
