Last-Minute Flight Time Changes Leave Passengers Scrambling
Airlines have been making significant last-minute adjustments to flight schedules, leaving passengers scrambling to rearrange their plans. Despite the disruption, airlines are currently breaking no rules.
The number of complaints about flight schedule changes has surged recently, with no clear cause identified. Travellers who booked cheaper tickets months in advance may face hefty rebooking fees for more convenient times. Airlines can consolidate flights due to seasonal demands, new routes, or cancellations, but the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and UK261 law offer little clarity on what constitutes a 'substantial' change.
Operational reasons such as high passenger volumes, airport disruptions, and flexible fare options are driving these last-minute adjustments. As a result, families may lose a day of their holiday, incur extra costs for transfers, accommodation, or pet boarding. Flights are often rescheduled to inconvenient morning or evening take-off times, and even those securing refunds may face higher costs for alternative flights at short notice.
Airlines are making major flight schedule changes as little as 14 days before departure, causing inconvenience for holidaymakers. While passengers face extra costs and disrupted plans, airlines are currently operating within the law.
