Lufthansa unveils upcoming long-haul flights starting from autumn, based in Munich.

Lufthansa, Germany's national airline, is set to expand its route network at Munich Airport with the introduction of a new nonstop flight to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The service, operated three times a week using an Airbus A350-900 aircraft, will commence on October 26, 2025[1][2][5].

The flight schedule for this new route is as follows: the departure from Munich is at 9:45 p.m., arriving in Riyadh at 4:50 a.m. local time the next day. The return flight leaves Riyadh at 6:25 a.m., landing in Munich at 10:25 a.m. local time[1][2][5]. Convenient connections to Lufthansa’s global network are provided, with the flights operating on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from Munich to Riyadh, and on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from Riyadh to Munich.

The Airbus A350-900, one of Lufthansa’s modern long-haul aircraft, is known for its advanced aerodynamic design and fuel efficiency[1][2][4]. The aircraft will be configured with 293 seats across Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy Class.

This year marks the 65th anniversary of Lufthansa's first flight to Saudi Arabia[6]. Riyadh, the capital city of Saudi Arabia with nearly eight million inhabitants, has been the capital since its independence in 1932[7]. Historically, Riyadh played an important role as a transit point for pilgrims on their way to Mecca and Medina.

In the coming years, Riyadh will host major international events: the World Expo in 2030 and the FIFA World Cup in 2034. Alongside Lufthansa, its sister companies Eurowings and ITA Airways will serve three Saudi Arabian destinations: Riyadh, Dammam, and Jeddah.

Saudi Arabia's involvement in the war in Yemen has been a subject of international criticism, and international organizations regularly criticize the suppression of freedom of expression, discrimination against women and minorities, and the use of the death penalty in the kingdom[8]. The murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018 at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul caused global outrage[9]. Despite its economic importance and ambitious modernization plans, the human rights situation in Saudi Arabia remains highly controversial.
