Million-Dollar Treasure Found Off Florida Coast: 1715 Shipwreck Coins Discovered

A team of divers has discovered a $1 million treasure off the Florida coast, consisting of over 1,000 silver and gold coins. The find, significant for historians and collectors, bears visible dates and mint marks from the 1715 shipwreck of a Spanish fleet carrying riches from the New World.

The coins, minted in Spanish colonies of Bolivia, Mexico, and Peru, were recovered by a salvage company using dive crews, boats, and underwater metal detection devices. Under Florida law, the state owns any recovered treasures, but salvagers can retain a portion after carrying out recovery services. The salvage company has developed a detailed inventory of the artifacts, with Florida officials selecting up to 20% for public keeping.

The owners of the discovered Spanish treasure chest, part of the 1715 Fleet – Queens Jewels LLC, are yet to be determined by the legal process.

The discovery of this treasure, valued at $1 million, sheds light on Florida's rich maritime history. The coins, now in state custody, will likely be preserved and exhibited for public appreciation. The salvage company awaits the legal process to determine their share of the recovery.
