Mosquitoes can be a nuisance due to their bites. Here's a guide on how to minimize your appeal to them:
Summer is here, and with it comes the pesky mosquitoes. Dr. Timothy C. Winegard, a historian and expert on the impact of mosquitoes on human history, shares his top five tips to help you enjoy your summer without the nuisance of mosquito bites.
- Eliminate Standing Water: Female mosquitoes lay eggs in even tiny amounts of still water, so it's crucial to eliminate standing water around your home and yard. This includes puddles in containers, tires, or bottle caps. By doing so, you can help reduce potential mosquito breeding grounds [1][3][4].
- Skip Scented Products: Mosquitoes are attracted to applied fragrances, so it's best to skip scented products like deodorants, soaps, and perfumes. Instead, try to increase skin bacteria by skipping showers occasionally. Higher bacterial levels on your skin can help deter mosquitoes [1].
- Clean Your Feet: Bacteria found on feet, which produce odors similar to ripening cheeses, are especially attractive to mosquitoes. Regularly cleaning your feet can help reduce the number of bites on your ankles and feet [1].
- Trim Vegetation: Adult mosquitoes often rest in shady, humid areas. Trimming bushes and grass near seating areas can help reduce these resting spots [3][4].
- Use Mosquito Dunks or Pellets: Treat unavoidable standing water with mosquito dunks or pellets containing Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti). This bacteria specifically kills mosquito larvae without harming other wildlife [4].
In addition to these tips, Dr. Winegard notes that mosquitoes hunt partly by sight, so avoiding alcohol (which makes you more visible) and removing mosquito hiding places can also help reduce bites [4].
Mosquitoes are often referred to as the "No. 1 killer of humanity across our existence," taking more than 1 million lives each year. Historically, diseases like malaria and yellow fever have significantly shaped human history [5]. Some clothes can be pretreated with the insecticide permethrin for added mosquito protection. Disease-heavy regions have suffered financially due to mosquito-transmitted diseases [6].
Interestingly, mosquitoes may prefer blood type O over types A and B for biting. People with blood type O are bitten twice as often as those with type A. Eighty-five percent of what makes a person alluring or less alluring to mosquitoes is prewired in their genetic circuit board [7].
It's also worth noting that mosquitoes can smell carbon dioxide from over 200 feet (60 meters) away and are attracted to high CO2 emissions. To help deter mosquitoes, it's recommended to keep yourself as cool as possible and opt for lighter-colored, long-sleeved attire [8].
Countries in the Northern Hemisphere have been able to develop more affluent economies because they are not continuously suffering from malaria [9]. More than half a million people die of malaria alone each year [10]. High CO2 emissions make detecting heat signatures easier for mosquitoes, so it's important to stay cool during the summer months.
