Narrative Arts and Disability: The Menace of Forgetfulness
Swap* Post* Instagram Story
Hey there! I've just shared a fresh tale about my kids, with my special-needs son taking center stage again. The little fella sometimes struggles with managing frustration and pesky thoughts that creep up on him. We're constantly working on this at school and home, but we've got a secret trick up our sleeves - the power of storytelling! If you're curious about our journey, give this a read: My family's adventure.
These tales aren't therapeutic per se, but they're sure Skittles for any young kiddo's senses!
Wanna hear the story behind this new yarn? Our son frequently frets about "forgetting" things. I've made it clear that it's normal for us all to forget stuff every now and then. In fact, I'm about as sharp as a bag of mustard seeds, so I often remind him of all the things I forgot throughout the day or the names of people who've slipped my mind. However, when frustration hits, simple explanations don't cut it. So, the Forgetting Monster was born. It's quite similar to the story structure you saw in my previous anecdote. We take these abstract annoyances and turn them into physical monsters, making it easier to tackle our problems together with a dash of fun.
So here's Victor and Emma's latest escapade. These kiddos are up against a new monster from the land of fantasy. It's a piece of a larger story, but I've tried to wrap it up in a way that makes sense. I hope you find it fun!

Victor says: Hey, do ya know me? We bumped into each other during the Muddled Monster Adventure. Today I'm gonna tell you a bit about myself. I've got some things I like and dislike. I love musical instruments, but their sounds can spook me out.
Emma says: No worries! I ain't playing musical instruments when Victor's in town. Unless he's pestering me, then I chase him with a toy accordion!
Victor says: Those Ugly-Thought monsters are still movin' on from the Imaginary World. They wanna nosh on all the awful thoughts and grow big enough to pop into our world.
Victor looks puzzled in his living room: "I reckon the Forgetting Monster made his way out of the fantasy world. Emma, I'm feeling a tad peculiar. I can't recall what I had for breakfast!"
Narrator: The Forgetting Monster is a quivering, blue blob. There's a hole in its head, 'cause it's forgettable as can be. If you spot it on the streets, make like a lightning bolt and vamoose. If it catches ya, it'll erase your identity.
Emma says: To shoo away the monsters ya need to keep 'em at arm's length from us humans. I got an idea, Victor. I'll pretend to forget everything to lure the Monster out.
Emma pretends to misplace something to attract the Monster: "Oh no, I've forgotten where I left my top-secret, super fun toy!"
Forgetting monster says: Ho ho ho, this is gold! Top-secret? Super fun? I gotta see that! Did you say you last saw it in the garage?
Narrator: As soon as the Forgetting Monster waltzes into the garage, Victor and Emma lock the door.
Forgetting Monster pleads: This is a trick! Let me out!
Victor and Emma cheer: "Not on our watch! Go back to the Imaginary Land, ya little monster!"
