Nigerian Startups Thrive in Kano, Positioning City as a Prominent Hub

In the heart of northern Nigeria, Kano has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years. This commercial capital, known for its vibrant entrepreneurial culture, has now joined the ranks of the top 1,000 startup cities globally.

The journey began in 2016 when a group of four individuals established Startup Kano, one of the first tech incubation hubs in the city. Over the past four years, Kano has witnessed a surge in startup activities, with the number of tech startups surging from five to about sixty between 2021 and 2024.

Startup Kano has played a significant role in this growth, serving as a gateway into tech for over 50,000 youth and assisting early-stage entrepreneurs in raising over $1 million for their tech-enabled businesses. The hub has become one of the largest tech incubation hubs in the northern region.

However, Ahmed Idris, founder of Enovate Labs, a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering innovation, cautions that the excitement within the ecosystem should not be mistaken for a major transformation. There is still much to be done, he explains, pointing to foundational challenges such as education, mentorship, and creating the right market.

Despite these challenges, instances of people and startups achieving great things have been observed. The anonymous co-founder of Startup Kano, for example, now bootstraps his own tech-driven company, emphasizing that finding the market for his product is more important to him now than funding.

Another co-founder of Startup Kano, who prefers to remain anonymous, emphasizes that Kano's ecosystem must adapt to the city's cultural context to be successful. This is a sentiment shared by Aisha Tofa, co-founder of Startup Kano, who explains that in the beginning, there was no existing model for them due to the vastly different environments in Kano.

Global organizations, the government, and private individuals have recognized the potential in Kano and are eager to contribute. Despite almost no awareness of technology in Kano just a few years ago, the idea of investing in technology is now becoming more accepted.

Ahmed Idris, in an interview with TechCabal, stated that the ecosystem in Kano has witnessed some remarkable instances of people and startups achieving great things. Kano's journey from a city with little technology awareness to a global tech hub is indeed a testament to the power of innovation and perseverance.
