Norwich's First Electric Buses Hit the Road, Slashing Emissions
Norwich's public transport has taken a significant step towards sustainability with the introduction of its first electric buses, operated by Flixbus. The vibrant, zero-emission double-deckers began service recently, marking a milestone in the city's commitment to cleaner air and reduced carbon emissions. Piers Marlow, Managing Director of First East of England, expressed excitement about the project and its environmental benefits.
Flixbus aims to fully electrify its Roundtree Way depot by March 2024, replacing its entire diesel fleet with these eco-friendly vehicles. The new buses were manufactured by Wrightbus and are part of Flixbus's ambitious goal to convert its entire fleet to zero tailpipe emissions by 2035.
The project was funded with a £14.7 million investment from the Department for Transport's Zero Emission Bus Regional Area (ZEBRA) funding, alongside a £23 million investment from Flixbus. The seven electric buses now serving Norwich offer a cleaner, quieter, and smoother ride, equipped with modern amenities like USB charging points and enhanced accessibility features. Each vehicle saves around 75 tonnes of CO2 per year compared to diesel buses, contributing to a significant reduction in emissions.
The introduction of electric buses in Norwich is a testament to the city's and Flixbus's commitment to sustainability. With plans to fully electrify the Roundtree Way depot by 2024 and convert the entire fleet to zero emissions by 2035, Flixbus is leading the way in creating a greener, healthier future for Norwich's residents and visitors alike.
