Power outage leads to cancellation of 437 flights.
Reworked Article:
The recent power outage across Portuguese airports led to chaos, canceling a whopping 437 flights and disrupting travel for over 74,000 passengers. According to a statement from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing, the hardest-hit airport was Lisbon's Humberto Delgado, where 348 flights were eliminated and 66,000 travelers disrupted.
Porto's Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport wasn't far behind, with 60 flights canceled and 7,000 passengers affected. Faro's Gago Coutinho Airport experienced 29 flight cancellations, impacting more than 5,000 passengers. In contrast, the effect on island airports was relatively minor.
The involved authorities,ANAC, Anacom, and IMT, reported that NAV, the air traffic services manager, kept services running without interruption, and ANA, the infrastructure manager, diligently carried out their responsibilities.
ANAC proposed that businesses review their contracts with telecommunications service providers and devise contingency plans for power and communication disruptions applicable to all airports, airlines, air traffic control services, ground handling companies, and suppliers of onboard and airport supplies. These measures would facilitate a swift response in managing disruptions.
The recommendations also emphasized the need to incorporate these suggestions in future concession contract renegotiations and to conduct collaborative simulations of various airport stakeholders for technological and power failures. Prioritizing power sources that don't depend on fuel was another suggested measure.
Moreover, ANAC advocated for continuous training of human resources focused on technological and power disruptions, as well as public awareness campaigns to educate passengers on what to do during power and technological failures.
These reports provide an analysis of the impact of the total electricity outage in each sector, offering a set of recommendations and measures, some for immediate application, while others represent structural improvements designed to improve crisis management strategies.
What about implementing contingency plans for power and communication disruptions in our lifestyle, including travel, sports, and other sectors? For instance, we could create backup power sources for sports facilities, plan alternative routes for travelers during electricity outages, and provide clear instructions on what to do during such events. Similarly, promoting the use of renewable power sources in the travel industry could help reduce the impact of such blackouts.
