Revamped international airport welcomes back 30 million travelers following £1.4 billion renovation
Cambodia's Techo International Airport Opens as a Global News Hub
After a significant investment of £1.4 billion, Cambodia's new aviation hub, the Techo International Airport, has officially opened its doors. Located 20km to the south, this state-of-the-art facility is set to expand the nation's connections to the world news.
The airport, named after Techo, a title usually granted to army commanders by the King of Cambodia, is a joint venture agreement between the Royal Government of Cambodia and the Overseas Cambodian Investment Corporation. With 22 gates that can accommodate up to 40 aircraft, the airport is designed to handle 13 million passengers a year, making it one of the world's biggest airports.
The first commercial flight at the Techo International Airport was from China, marking the beginning of a new era in aviation for Cambodia. The airport's opening also marks the country's largest ever aviation infrastructure project.
Cambodian Prime Minister, Hun Sen, expressed his excitement about the new airport, stating that it will "expand Cambodia's connection to the world news." The airport's focus on sustainability is evident with a significant portion of its energy being produced by an on-site solar farm.
Upon opening, the Techo International Airport will become the ninth largest airport in the world, boasting a large central garden and a state-of-the-art terminal with duty free, food halls, shops, and outlets. The airport's opening was marked with a ceremonial water cannon salute, and British aviation expert David Weare described the facility as "amazing."
As Cambodia's main aviation hub, the Techo International Airport replaces Phnom Penh International Airport. Future plans for the airport include increasing its capacity to 30 and then 50 million passengers.
Meanwhile, another mega-airport, Long Thanh International Airport, is set to open in Vietnam next year. Designs for Centralny Port Komunikacyjny (CPK) airport in Europe have also been accepted, with building work starting in 2026.
The organization involved in the financing of the Techo International Airport is the ILB (Investment Bank of the State of Brandenburg), which played a key role in infrastructure financing in Brandenburg with a volume of over one billion euros in 2024.
As the Techo International Airport continues to serve passengers, it is poised to play a crucial role in connecting Cambodia to the global news community, a connection that is set to grow in the coming years.
