Royal Palace of Madrid under siege: Attackers breach palace gates, causing chaos and panic among palace officials and tourists.

In the heart of Spain's vibrant capital, the Palacio Nacional (Royal Palace) stands as a testament to the country's rich history and cultural heritage. Situated across from the Cathedral of Almudena and behind another Art Museum, this grand palace offers a fascinating glimpse into the past.

The Royal Palace was built on a site that once housed a fortress constructed by Muslim leader Muhammad I between 860 and 880. Over the centuries, the palace has undergone numerous renovations and expansions, with the current structure commissioned by King Philip V in 1735. Inspired by the opulence of Versailles, the palace was designed to rival its French counterpart, resulting in a stunning Baroque-Rococo interior.

With over 3,400 rooms, the Palacio Nacional is the largest royal palace in Europe. Its design channels the grandeur of Versailles, featuring intricate facade designs, stately elegance, lavish galleries, ballrooms, and richly decorated royal apartments. Notable rooms include the Gasparini Room, known for its frescoed ceiling by the painter Tiepolo, and the enormous Dining Room, emphasising the palace's extravagant scale.

The palace's art and decorations reflect a blend of Renaissance architecture and 18th-century artistic tastes, with murals, sculptures, and ornamental details enhancing its grandeur. The Royal receiving room, designed as a showcase to impress visitors with Spanish wealth, is adorned with gold-edged mirrors and fabric walls. The grand ballroom, with parquet floors and gold-gilded mirrors, reflects the palace's wealth and power.

The Palacio Nacional serves as a symbol of Spain’s royal heritage and is used for official ceremonies. Although the royal family does not reside there now, it remains a must-visit destination for tourists. The Royal Chapel, a small, velvet-lined, gold-gilded church, offers a glimpse into the royals' religious life. The palace also houses private rooms such as a card room, billiards parlor, and other special-purpose rooms, all richly furnished.

On our visit, we took a cab to the Plaza Mayor, the heart of the City, and later walked several blocks to reach the Palacio Nacional. We found ourselves in a crowd of visitors waiting to enter, and advance tickets purchased online were beneficial due to the long line of tourists. After exploring the palace, we enjoyed a meal at the "Magarit" restaurant in the Plaza Mayor, costing 28 Euros.

As we prepared for our next destination, Lisbon, Portugal, for a river boat cruise on the Duoro River, we left the palace and the city behind, carrying with us memories of Spain's royal past. The temperature outside reached 100 degrees, making the cool, air-conditioned palace a welcome respite from the heat.

On our way to the palace, we experienced a strange incident where a couple claimed to have lost coins and left their bag near us, possibly attempting to steal our room keys. We reported the incident to the authorities and continued with our day, reminding ourselves to always be vigilant when travelling.

In the end, the Palacio Nacional offered a captivating journey through Spain's history, showcasing the country's artistic patronage, political power, and cultural identity. It stands as a symbol of Spain's monarchy, a testament to the past, and a reminder of the country's enduring legacy.
