Royal party tours archaeological excavations and tombs of ancient pharaohs in Luxor, Egypt during their visit concluding their trip
Spanish Monarchs Witness Ancient Wonders and Advocate for Peace in Egypt
King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain recently concluded their state visit to Egypt, a trip that saw them exploring the country's rich history while also advocating for peace and humanitarian aid in the Middle East.
During their visit, the royal couple toured Luxor, one of the ancient civilization's capitals on the banks of the Nile River. They visited the Luxor Museum, a main tourist attraction in the region due to its abundance of historical antiquities.
In the Valley of the Kings, they were shown archaeological excavations led by Spanish researchers. Among the sites they visited was the ancient temple of Pharaoh Tutmosis III, where a 12-ton portal used for worshipping the pharaoh was discovered. They also visited the tombs of Pharaohs Ramses V, Ramses VI, and Seti I, with the lighting of these tombs carried out by Spanish companies.
Spanish archaeologist Miriam Seco led one of the excavations visited by the monarchs. However, the search results do not provide specific information about which Spanish researchers conducted archaeological excavations in the Necropolis of the Kings in Luxor during the week of March 18, 2023.
King Felipe VI condemned the "brutal and unacceptable suffering" of the population in Gaza during a meeting on Tuesday at the Spanish Embassy in Cairo. He described the situation in Gaza as an "unbearable humanitarian crisis" that is in a state of "total devastation".
The monarchs also visited the tombs of Pharaohs Ramses V, Ramses VI, and Seti I during their tour. King Felipe VI acknowledged "the mediating role" that Egypt has been playing since the beginning of the massacre to "achieve a ceasefire agreement", the release of hostages, and the full establishment of humanitarian aid.
In addition to his concerns for the Middle East, King Felipe VI also advocated for the creation of a "viable Palestinian state" that can coexist "in peace and security" with Israel. He endorsed initiatives such as the Gaza reconstruction plan, necessary for its population to recover "their lives and their dignity".
As their state visit came to a close, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia condemned the ongoing suffering in Gaza and praised Egypt's efforts towards peace and humanitarian aid. Their visit served as a reminder of the rich history that Egypt holds and the ongoing challenges that the Middle East faces.
