Samsung, SK Hynix & OpenAI Launch $500B Stargate AI Project
Samsung and SK Hynix have joined forces with OpenAI to launch the ambitious Stargate project, a $500 billion initiative aiming to develop advanced AI data center infrastructure. The project has sparked a surge in stock prices for both Samsung and SK Hynix, with the latter's shares climbing nearly 10% to an all-time high.
OpenAI, the AI research and deployment company, has unveiled partnerships with Samsung Group, SK Group, and South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT for the Stargate initiative. The project aims to make South Korea one of the world's top three AI powers by 2027, as per the country's upcoming 'basic law on artificial intelligence'.
Samsung and SK Hynix have agreed to support OpenAI by supplying up to 900,000 DRAM wafers monthly until 2029, more than double the current HBM industry capacity. Other companies involved in the Stargate project include Oracle, SoftBank, Nvidia, and CoreWeave. Samsung C&T and Samsung Heavy Industries will explore opportunities in floating power plants, control centers, and floating data center infrastructure.
SK Telecom has plans to collaborate with OpenAI to build an AI data center in South Korea's southwest region as part of 'Stargate Korea'. Both Samsung and SK Group will explore implementing ChatGPT enterprise solutions in collaboration with OpenAI.
The Stargate project is set to revolutionize AI data center infrastructure, with OpenAI's projected memory demand driving the need for advanced memory chips. The partnerships between OpenAI, Samsung, SK Hynix, and other tech giants signal a significant investment in South Korea's AI future.
