Singapore Sidecars Aims to Conquer Cities with Electric Sidecars
Simon Wong, a Singapore-based entrepreneur, has big plans for his electric sidecar business, Singapore Sidecars. After finding inspiration in a Taiwanese company, Wong envisions future endurance runs to cities like Malacca, Penang, Barcelona, and potentially London on a single charge. The company, backed by Temasek, uses a battery-swapping system, making long-distance travel feasible.
Wong's journey began with charity fundraisers after his wife's passing. In 2018, he teamed up with Johnny, an engineer with a passion for vintage sidecars, to turn the concept into a business. The company will soon launch its first electric tours, themed around sustainability. The electric sidecar project started in 2019, aiming to meet Singapore's government safety standards for battery systems.
The new electric sidecar, branded under a sub-label called Funbee, combines retro curves with modern details for extended range. Wong found the company's overhead-free model through his decades of practicing tai chi, focusing on finding the point of least resistance. Wong is now preparing to launch an electric sidecar fleet in Singapore.
Wong's long-term vision includes international expansions and eventually stepping away from the business to return to the quiet discipline of tai chi. With its innovative battery-swapping system and sustainable focus, Singapore Sidecars is poised to make a mark in the electric vehicle scene.
