Hefty Traffic Crazy Southwestern Highways Over Holiday Weekend

Southwestern city streets to see surge of people as holidays close - Southwestern streets to reach capacity by holiday's end.

Get ready for a bumpy ride, drivers in Baden-Württemberg! The long weekend ahead, including Corpus Christi and post-Whitsun holidays, is bound to see chaos on the roads, especially those heading north. The road warriors at ADAC Württemberg forecast a surge in traffic, with many taking advantage of the long weekend for a quick trip. The end of the two-week Whitsun holidays in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria will wrap up on Sunday.

Brace yourself for gridlock over the weekend as vacationers make their way back home. Sunday afternoon could be particularly congested, with traffic jams likely. However, on Corpus Christi itself, it’s expected to be relatively calm, as short-term travelers tend to skedaddle on Wednesday afternoon, as per ADAC expert Holger Bach.

ADAC: Beat The Rush - Or Take The Holiday

Bach suggests drivers with flexible schedules to venture out on Thursday. Those who gotta go on the weekend should hit the road before 8:00 AM and after 6:00 PM to dodge the biggest traffic jams.

The following roads will likely see the heaviest traffic:

  • A5 (Basel - Karlsruhe - Heidelberg)
  • A6 (Nuremberg - Heilbronn - Mannheim)
  • A7 (Füssen - Ulm - Würzburg)
  • A8 (Munich - Stuttgart - Karlsruhe)
  • A81 (Singen - Stuttgart - Heilbronn)
  • Stuttgart metropolitan area

Construction sites are also causing delays all over the place. The most significant traffic holdups are anticipated to be a section of the A8 near Pforzheim and an area on the A6 between Walldorf interchange and Wiesloch. Last year, the total length of traffic jams in the state at the end of the Whitsun holidays (Sunday) was a whopping 416 kilometers.

Roadblocks Abroad Too

In Austria and Switzerland, where Corpus Christi is also a holiday, bottlenecks could occur — for instance, on the Tauern and Brenner motorways and the Gotthard tunnel. Given the expected summer heat, the ADAC urges packing plenty of drinks and taking regular breaks. Don’t forget, it’s crucial to never leave kids or pets in a sweltering car!

  1. Despite the expected congestion during the Corpus Christi weekend, ADAC expert Holger Bach advises flexible travelers to venture out on Thursday to avoid the heaviest traffic, while those with fixed schedules should consider leaving before 8:00 AM or after 6:00 PM to avoid the peak hours.
  2. With Corpus Christi being a holiday in Austria and Switzerland, potential bottlenecks might occur on the Tauern and Brenner motorways, the Gotthorn tunnel, and other roads, so travelers are reminded to pack plenty of drinks, take regular breaks, and never leave children or pets in a sweltering car.
