Spain Welcomes Record 22.3M Tourists in July-August
Spain has seen a surge in tourism this year. Between July and August, the country welcomed a record-breaking 22.3 million foreign tourists, a 2.9 percent increase from the previous year. This strong performance follows a 3.9 percent rise in the number of visitors from January to August, totalling almost 66.8 million tourists.
The summer months saw particularly robust growth. In July, the number of visitors rose by 1.6 percent compared to the previous year. The United Kingdom, France, and Germany were the top sources of tourists, reflecting a trend that has persisted since 2025.
This tourism boom is significant for Spain's economy, which has recently shown strong international growth in this sector. However, the increase in visitors has also sparked protests in popular destinations like Barcelona, Málaga, and the Balearic and Canary Islands, with locals expressing concerns about overtourism.
Spain's tourism industry continues to thrive, with record numbers of visitors in recent months. The United Kingdom, France, and Germany remain the primary sources of tourists. While this growth is beneficial for Spain's economy, it also presents challenges, as demonstrated by the rising protests against overtourism in popular destinations.
