Gear Up for Summer Travel? Not So Fast with Swiss Air Lines!
Swiss Airlines arm of Lufthansa is forced to axe approximately 1400 flights during summer season.
Hey there! Time for a vacation, right? But not if you're flying with Swiss, the Lufthansa subsidiary. They've got a bit of a problem on their hands this summer, and it's causing a whopping 1,400 flight cancellations!
Of course, there's no shortage of people eager to jet off, but Swiss is feeling the squeeze. The culprit? A dramatic pilot deficit! According to Swiss, a string of unexpected events and overly optimistic planning are to blame. Long-haul and short-to-medium-haul flights are all taking a hit.
A Swiss spokesperson confirmed that factor such as pregnancies, accidents, and the training of crews for the Airbus A350s are contributing to this puzzling absences of pilots. On top of that, the new collective labor agreement, which includes improved working time regulations, has jacked up the demand for personnel by around 70 full-time positions.
Whew! Sounds like a real pickle, doesn't it? Swiss is even facing issues with the Airbus A220 jets due to engine problems. The fleet's maintenance is causing even more complications, and Swiss manager Oliver Buchhofer stated that the issue is because there simply aren't enough pilots to go around. Swiss has exhausted all possibilities of external help from partners and Lufthansa, too.
To deal with the crisis in the short-term, some older pilots are putting off retirement, and part-time workers are stepping up their game, working more hours. In the long haul, Swiss has ambitious plans to boost their training capacity in the cockpit, aiming to hire up to 110 new pilots annually.
So, ya know, if you were planning to fly Swiss this summer, make sure to check if your flight is still on schedule! Here's to hoping for smooth skies and no last-minute surprises!
