Thriving Vacation Spots of Saxony-Anhalt in July 2025
In July 2025, the tourism industry experienced a slight setback, according to the monthly tourism survey (accommodation statistics). The data, which focuses on establishments with 10 or more beds, showed a decrease in both guest arrivals and overnight stays compared to the same month the previous year.
The occupancy rate for July 2025 was 36.6%, a drop from 38.2% in July 2024. Approximately 331,600 guest arrivals and around 875,400 overnight stays were recorded during this period.
The average length of stay for guests was 2.6 days, a slight decrease from 2.7 days in July of the previous year. However, the survey does not provide information on the reasons for this decrease.
The decline was observed across various regions. Saxony-Anhalt, the Altmark region, Halle, Saale, Unstrut and Anhalt-Wittenberg, and the Harz and Harz foreland region all reported decreases in both guest arrivals and overnight stays. The only exception was Magdeburg, Elbe-Börde-Heide, which reported increases in both guest arrivals and overnight stays.
The survey also revealed a decrease in guest arrivals and overnight stays for domestic visitors, with a 4.2% and 4.8% drop respectively. For international guests, there was a slight increase of 0.5% in guest arrivals and 0.7% in overnight stays.
Guest houses, camping sites, and pensions all reported decreases in guest arrivals and overnight stays, ranging from 13.6% to 6.3%. On the other hand, holiday centers were the only ones to report increases, with a 3.4% increase in guest arrivals and a 7.8% increase in overnight stays.
The survey, however, does not provide information on the number of accommodation establishments that were open during the survey period, or on the occupancy rate of these establishments. It also does not provide data on tourism activities outside of accommodation establishments, such as day trips or visits to attractions.
From January to July 2025, the number of guest arrivals decreased by 0.2% to around 1,897,600, and the number of overnight stays decreased by 2.3% to approximately 4,635,200 compared to the same period the previous year. The survey does not provide information on the reasons for this decline, such as economic factors, travel restrictions, or changes in consumer behavior.
Despite the overall decline, it's worth noting that 86.8% of guests were from within Germany, indicating a strong domestic tourism market. Additionally, there is no information available about which companies or organizations were responsible for the decline in guest and overnight stay numbers in holiday resorts in the Halle area in July 2025.
As the tourism industry continues to navigate through these challenges, it will be interesting to see how the trends evolve in the coming months.
