The Trump Effect on US Tourism: A Damper on China Travel
Tourism Sector in China Experiences a Significant Slowdown
In the realm of global tourism, conflicts and crises have pushed China into a tough spot, with fewer tourists from Germany making their way to the People's Republic. But it's a different story for US travel, with experts predicting a change soon due to President Trump.
Despite President Donald Trump's second inauguration, major airports like Frankfurt and Munich in Germany continue to see increased passenger numbers on US routes. However, this is not the case with China traffic, where airports report a decrease in travelers. Since 2019, the United States has overtaken China in terms of global visitor numbers.
However, experts expect a significant negative Trump effect for US tourism this year, with the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) and consultancy firm Oxford Economics estimating revenue losses of over $12 billion due to fewer foreign visitors.
The Drop in China Flight Routes
This year, passenger numbers on China flight routes to and from Munich and Frankfurt have already decreased. In Munich, the number dropped by 1,300 to around 203,000 passengers in the first five months. In Frankfurt, there were 180,300 flight passengers in the first four months, 27,000 fewer than the previous year.
Experts attribute this, in part, to a reduced flight offering. Comparing the five-year period with 2019, passenger numbers on China routes were also lower last year.
The Unwelcome Mat for Foreign Tourists
Trump's second term has been associated with a decrease in tourism from several allied nations such as Australia, Canada, Germany, and South Korea. Factors like stricter entry processes, long airport waits, intense customs questioning, inconsistent visa screenings, and a generally unwelcoming atmosphere have discouraged travelers looking for smooth and relaxed travel experiences.
The administration's "America First" policies have also created a perception that the US is less open and friendly to outsiders, further deterring international tourists. Additionally, travel disruptions and restrictive immigration policies contribute to an unsettling atmosphere for foreign visitors.
Although specific data on Chinese travelers is not readily available, Asian tourism as a whole, including visitors from China, is affected in key destinations like California. The combination of tightened visa policies, travel disruptions, and geopolitical shifts under Trump’s administration is expected to continue discouraging Chinese and other foreign travelers from visiting the United States.

- Despite the surge in US travel due to the Trump administration, community policies, such as stricter entry processes and intensified customs questioning, have created an unwelcoming atmosphere, potentially impacting lifestyle choices for foreign tourists.
- The decrease in employment policy on China flight routes to and from major US cities like Munich and Frankfurt suggests a shift in the travel industry's lifestyle preferences, with fewer Chinese tourists taking vacations in the States due to war-and-conflicts and politics-related uncertainties.
- Amid growing concerns about crime-and-justice, general news, and war-and-conflicts, the damper on China travel and the drop in foreign visitors from other allied nations pose economic challenges for the US employment policy, with the tourism industry experiencing significant revenue losses totaling over $12 billion this year.
