Rebounding Tourism in Quang Ninh: Emphasis on Safety and Vibrancy
After a temporary setback, Quang Ninh province in Vietnam is making a strong comeback in the tourism industry. The recovery strategy focuses on enhanced safety measures and vigorous promotional efforts to restore confidence and attract visitors.
Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO-recognised complex, is being transformed into a safe, vibrant, year-round destination. Key initiatives include a four-month tourism campaign by Ha Long Sun Ltd., featuring weekly fireworks, cultural performances, and culinary markets to boost domestic tourist interest and extend visitor stays beyond daytime tours.
New entertainment hubs like Halong Marina are being developed, hosting music festivals and premium shows, contributing to a “city that never sleeps” image to reinvigorate tourism appeal. Ongoing investments in luxury tourism complexes, such as the USD 2 billion Van Don casino-resort project, aim to elevate Quang Ninh’s profile as a high-end, fully integrated tourism and entertainment hub.
These efforts are evident in the rebound in tourism revenue and visitation. In 2025, Quang Ninh reported a 25% increase in tourism revenue and aims to host 20 million tourists, including 4.5 million international visitors, indicating restored and growing tourist confidence.
Quang Ninh is also focusing on safety enhancements. Local authorities have implemented safety upgrades, adding six new storm shelters, approving warning systems for storms and lightning, and upgrading communication devices. The provincial Military Command has deployed a ship for medical services and two patrol boats for round-the-clock patrols.
The province is hosting several major events through the end of 2025, including the National U23 Fencing Championship, cultural and culinary showcases, OCOP fair, Ha Long Bay Heritage International Marathon, and the Yèn Tử Heritage Marathon. A kite flying and boat racing festival is planned for September, followed by a food festival in October.
Quang Ninh is actively promoting tourism nationwide to restore visitor confidence. International tourism to Quang Ninh remains stable, particularly with visitors from Japan, the Philippines, Malaysia, and expected increases from the Republic of Korea (MICE tourists by mid-August, high-spending tourists from the US by September). Between January and July, Quang Ninh welcomed over 14.6 million tourists, a 13% increase year-on-year, including more than 2.6 million international visitors.
As of early August, the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism reports an average of 7,000-8,000 visitors daily. The province's commitment to safety and vibrancy, coupled with its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty, promises a bright future for Quang Ninh's tourism industry.
- To further emphasize the vibrancy of Quang Ninh, the province is hosting various sports events such as the National U23 Fencing Championship and the Ha Long Bay Heritage International Marathon.
- The province's focus on safety enhancements is not limited to tourism, as it has also deployed a ship for medical services and two patrol boats for round-the-clock patrols, under the guidance of the provincial Military Command.
- The reinvigoration of Quang Ninh's tourism appeal is not only attracting leisure travelers but also business tourists, with expected increases from the Republic of Korea (MICE tourists) by mid-August and high-spending tourists from the US by September.
- The tourism recovery in Quang Ninh isn't only about sports and traveling; cultural and culinary showcases, OCOP fairs, and food festivals are also part of the province's strategy to emphasize its rich cultural heritage and lifestyle offerings.
