1. The Past's Tomorrow: Potsdam's 2022 Literature Festival
Daily Literary Event Held in Potsdam: Tomato-Themed Symposium - Yesterday's forecast of tomorrow: a glimpse into the past?
What if the past held the key to our future? That's the intriguing question this year's Literature Festival, LIT:potsdam, is diving into. Under the captivating theme "The Future of the Past", the festival is set to stimulate your curiosity from July 1 to 6, as announced by the organizers. Notable guests gracing the event are Dietmar Baer, Mithu Sanyal, and Navid Kermani. Literature critic Denis Scheck helms the artistic direction for the third time.
For the first time, the central venue is the Orangerieschloss Park Sanssouci. The festival chairperson, Marianne Ludes, expressed her hopes for a sold-out affair during the program's presentation for the 13th festival edition. Tickets are now available online.
Bulgarian writer Georgi Gospodinov, who won the International Booker Prize for his novel "Time Refuge", will kick off the festival with a thought-provoking meeting with Bulgarian-German actor Samuel Finzi. The pair will delve into the imaginative concept of time travel and the consequences it might bring upon us. The discussion, dubbed "Baer Reads Baer", is not limited to adults. Dietmar Baer, known for his role as Tatort detective Freddy Schenk, will engage young readers with a rousing reading from "Paddington Celebrates Easter" by Michael Bond.
At the Orangerieschloss, cultural scientist and author Mithu Sanyal will discuss her research and storytelling techniques, examining postcolonialism, capitalism, and resistance in a false world. Sanyal's novel "Antichristie" raises questions about genuine resistance in an artificial society and the amount of violence within each of us.
Navid Kermani, an Islamic studies scholar, will captivate audiences with excerpts from his book "Now in the Other Direction", which recounts his journey through East Africa. Kermani eloquently shares the reasons behind his adventurous expeditions into countries considered risky.
Last year, a record 6,000 visitors attended the festival, graced by literary luminaries such as Benedict Wells, Cornelia Funke, and Marc Uwe Kling. According to Ludes, as of now, no funding has been secured from the city or the state. The festival organizers are eagerly awaiting substantial financial confirmations of close to 100,000 euros to ensure the festival unfolds as planned.
